Hadestown is now playing at Lyric Theatre!
Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – as it invites you on an unforgettable journey to the underworld and back
Hadestown is a modern retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Set in a post-apocalyptic world blending modern and ancient elements, the musical follows Orpheus, a gifted but poor musician, who falls in love with Eurydice, a young woman trying to survive the harsh realities of their world. Eurydice is lured to the underworld, Hadestown, by Hades, the god of the underworld, who promises her security and freedom from life’s hardships.
Orpheus, desperate to rescue Eurydice, journeys to Hadestown. Along the way, he encounters Hades’ wife, Persephone, who is torn between her love for her husband and empathy for the struggling souls in Hadestown. The story highlights the power of love and music against the backdrop of a world where hope is scarce. The climax revolves around Orpheus’ attempt to lead Eurydice back to the living world, facing the challenge of not looking back at her until they have both reached the surface, a test of faith and trust.
